2008 BOARD OF DIRECTORS STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

You have been nominated to stand for election as a member of the Board of Directors of the Saint Leo Alumni Association. The board of directors oversees the activities of the alumni association and serves as an advisory committee to Saint Leo University on matters of importance to alumni. The board of directors represents all Saint Leo alumni, promoting active alumni participation and involvement through on-campus and regional programs; serving as an advocate for the university’s mission, plans and purpose; identifying and encouraging the enrollment of quality and diverse students; assisting in gathering philanthropic support; and recognizing university alumni and friends who are distinguished by their loyalty, professional achievement, and community service.

The board of directors meets three weekends each year, usually at the university’s main campus in Saint Leo, Florida.  Board meetings generally are held once in the fall, once in the spring, and once during the summer.  Board meetings generally begin late afternoon on Friday and finish mid-afternoon on Saturday. Committee meetings and a business meeting take place during each board meeting.

As board members, we agree to serve a three-year term; attend three meetings each year, including a planning retreat (usually held in conjunction with the summer board meeting); chair or participate in one alumni association committee or initiative; support the university through its annual fund campaign; be familiar with and support the programs and activities organized by the alumni association; serve as advocates on behalf of the university; represent the university and the association at alumni activities, events, and programs; attend and encourage other alumni to attend events and reunions; assist the university and the association in identifying, cultivating, and involving alumni in areas such as student recruitment, networking, legislative advocacy, regional activities, continuing education, and financial support; and serve as liaison between the association and the university in expressing the interests and concerns of alumni and committees.

Each director is assigned to at least one committee of the board.  All directors must have access to        e-mail, as most board communication occurs through e-mail.

Members of the board should reflect the diversity and interest of all Saint Leo alumni––and not be focused on their individual interest or background but rather on the whole of the Saint Leo community. The board also recognizes that each director brings to the board his or her unique and valuable perspective which naturally reflects his or her experience and constituency.

As elected leaders of the alumni association, directors have a responsibility to support Saint Leo, both with their financial support and in their local communities. Directors are expected to make a yearly gift to the annual fund commensurate with their financial ability, and are often asked to provide financial support for other initiatives of the university. Directors are asked to attend regional and university events and are encouraged to provide leadership in reunion, class and club activities.
